Terms and conditions followed in international shipping to protect against COVID-19

On 18 January 2023, ICAO issued recommendations to States on managing COVID-19-related risks in international air travel. These recommendations included the need to adopt evidence-based measures to reduce the risk of transmission of the virus, while maintaining continuity of air services. She also stressed the importance of regular risk assessment and coordination between countries to ensure the safety and security of air freight.

Terms and conditions vary between shipping companies, but many have taken special measures in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. For example:

Aramex: reserves the right to refuse or suspend the carriage of shipments if they pose a risk to public health or contravene local and international laws related to COVID-19.

DHL: Provides information on hazardous materials shipping policies and compliance with international standards, subject to COVID-19 related updates.

On 30 July 2020, WHO issued guidance on the resumption of international travel, which included recommendations to assess health risks and apply appropriate public health measures, such as screening travelers and quarantine when necessary.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, global supply chains have been impacted, prompting companies to adopt new practices to ensure shipping continuity, such as diversifying suppliers and adopting technology to enhance resilience.

Strategies for building supply chain immunity: Studies have pointed to the importance of building supply chain immunity to face the effects of epidemics, by diversifying supply sources and enhancing international cooperation to ensure the continuity of shipping and supply during health crises.
